The world of urban mobility is changing, and during the past ten years, the sector has lived through a digital revolution. With the latest technological innovations and mobility trends continuing to revolutionise the sector, it is up to the leading voices within public transport to define that future direction.

Among those developments are great leaps forward in digitalisation and I.T., with Artificial Intelligence, payment and ticketing, cybersecurity and Mobility-as-a-Service (MaaS) constantly advancing. With the question on what is happening in the world of digitalisation and I.T. within public transport taking centre stage, there is one international event working to provide those answers. Heading into the 2024 edition (Karlsruhe, Germany 14-16 May 2024), IT-TRANS is the largest event of its kind dedicated to I.T. and digitalisation within urban mobility.

The Business Model in Public Transport

That's what Mohamed Mezghani Secretary General at UITP explain in this interview for BtoB Rail at the UITP MENA 2024 in Dubai.

The public transport industry faces significant challenges in sustaining a viable business model. Balancing the need for fare revenue with providing affordable services, managing rising operational costs, and addressing competition from alternative transportation options are key hurdles. Additionally, government policies and regulations often influence funding and operational requirements, requiring adaptability from industry stakeholders to ensure continued service provision.

The world of mobility is rapidly changing, and artificial intelligence (AI) and big data are playing a major role in this transformation. AI and big data are enabling us to make smarter decisions, create more efficient systems, and develop innovative solutions to the challenges of modern mobility. From autonomous vehicles to smart cities, AI and big data are revolutionizing the way we move.

At the same time, the use of AI and big data in the mobility sector is raising important questions about privacy, security, and ethical considerations. As we move forward, it is essential that we ensure that these technologies are used responsibly and ethically.

In this magazine, we will explore the latest developments in AI and big data in the mobility sector. We will look at the potential of these technologies, the challenges they present, and the ethical considerations that must be taken into account. We will also examine the impact of AI and big data on the future of mobility, and how they can be used to create a more sustainable and equitable transportation system.

We invite you to join us on this journey as we explore the exciting possibilities of AI and big data in the mobility sector.

ASC (Advanced Sensors & Calibration), headquartered in Bavarian Pfaffenhofen, is one of the leading manufacturers of acceleration and rotation rate sensors, as well as IMUs (Inertial Measurement Units). ASC-sensors are used, e.g., in crash tests in vehicle development, for safety and wear monitoring of rail-bound vehicles, for stability monitoring of turbines or measurement of fluctuations in container vessels.

Case Study with Alstom

Use under the harshest conditions

Sensors from ASC ensure both safety and comfort in rail transport

Alstom is one of the world’s leading manufacturers of rail vehicles. Among other things, the company test the running dynamics and bogie strength of new trains at their Salzgitter, Germany site. Capacitive acceleration sensors from ASC GmbH – a globally leading manufacturer – provide crucial measurement data during testing.

User report with imc

To make sure safety isn't lost in transit

ASC sensors ensure high-precision measurements in commissioning testing of long-distance trains

Measurement systems for commissioning tests of passenger trains have to meet high standards. That's why measurement technology manufacturer imc Test & Measurement GmbH used sensors from ASC GmbH for the test runs of a new long- distance passenger train. Their high precision and toughness won imc over.

DB Systemtechnik

Rail section monitoring during running operation

Sensors from ASC help Deutsche Bahn identify track damage early on

The condition of the rail network has to be inspected on a regular basis. For several years, Deutsche Bahn AG have also been using regular trains for monitoring infrastructure as part of their DB 4.0 digitalisation strategy. High-precision sensors from ASC GmbH in Pfaffenhofen, Germany are used to scan the track bed with millimetre precision here.

UContinuous infrastructure monitoring (CIM) on high-speed in-service trains

Railway infrastructure monitoring is cumbersome, disruptive and expensive. Or isn’t it? In partnership with Siemens Mobility Türkiye Tand DB Systemtechnik GmbH, Turkish State Railways (TCDD) decided to take an innovative approach: Continuous Infrastructure Monitoring (CIM). Enabled by ASC sensor technology, they are moving from a corrective “find and fix” approach to “predict and prevent”: the proactive identification of future risks by integrating historic with real-time data collected through inertial sensors embedded in high-speed

passenger trains.
