For the third time we are excited to participate, as a major exhibitor, to InnoTrans on 20-23 September, this time under a new name – Europe’s Rail Joint Undertaking. Our predecessor programme Shift2Rail participated back in 2016, and also in 2018, showcasing the very first results coming from the research and innovation partnership. In 2022, we will display more advanced innovations from the Shift2Rail Programme, and explain to the participants the new objectives and mission of EU-Rail, including the new system approach that will facilitate the convergence of the sector to make the Single European Railway Area a reality.

The objective of Europe’s Rail €1.2 billion partnership is to deliver a high-capacity integrated European railway network by eliminating barriers to interoperability and providing solutions for full integration, covering traffic management, vehicles, infrastructure and services, aiming at faster uptake and deployment of projects and innovations, approaching this challenge through three main pillars completing each other and covering the system approach, innovation and deployment.
Europe’s Rail focus is on developing the new technological and operational solutions to deliver the railway system meeting the expectations of the Sustainable and Smart Mobility Strategy, which aims to double highspeed rail traffic by 2030 and, double rail freight traffic by 2050. This transformation process shall be driven by the rail sector with an integrated system approach, involving technologies, operations but also the staff working in the rail system and its training to new functions and roles. Digitalisation and automation are key enablers of such transformation and are expected to contribute to substantially increasing the performance of rail and creating opportunities for the deployment of future proof technologies.
Shift2Rail, the predecessor programme, has supported an unprecedented convergence of the rail sector and set the baseline of which the new R&I Programme will reach TRL 8, and possibly 9. The recognised work achieved by Shift2Rail so far is shown through the different technological results from the Innovation Programmes (IPs). For example, the IP1 has made progress in traction elements that reduced the consumption of energy. In IP2, the ATO GOA2, and adaptable train communications are only a few of the results that once deployed will have a major impact on the sector. On the freight side, the Digital Automatic Coupler (DAC) is a key result and a great example of how important Research and Innovation is for the railway sector. DAC is considered an enabler of a fully digital rail freight.
These and other solutions will be directly available on Europe’s Rail stand 511, located in Hall 27. Visitors can expect being able to test and witness demonstrations directly showcased by experts from our Members and many other projects’ participants. A glimpse on what to expect can be seen below.
To put all these innovations in the spotlight, we will also be launching the 2nd edition of our Catalogue of Solutions. The Catalogue brings together the innovative solutions and approaches which Shift2Rail Members and projects’ participants are delivering to transform the rail systems. While the first edition was launched during the World Congress on Railway Research back in 2019 in Japan and in presence of EU Ambassador Patricia Flor, the updated publication will provide a much more in-depth timeline for market deployment.
We will also have a number of activities throughout the event, one of them being hosting a high-level session titled Digital Automatic Coupling - Transforming Europe's Rail Freight, organised in collaboration with our Founding Member Deutsche Bahn and the European DAC Delivery Programme. It will be an opportunity to discuss the benefits of the DAC solution and how to best prepare for its roll-out, including the societal impact and investment scenarios. The event will take place on Wednesday 21 September at 15:00-17:00 CET at the InnoTrans Speakers Corner. We expect high level participation, including the German State Secretary, representatives from the European Commission and the rail freight sector.
Europe’s Rail and its predecessor programme Shift2Rail have always supported initiatives that seek to improve gender balance in the railway sector. Shift2Rail was one of the very first supporters of the Women in Transport initiative led by the European Commission. Back in 2018 Shift2Rail announced the first edition of the ‘Women in Rail Research & Innovation Award’. With this initiative, S2R recognised the work of a woman, or a group of people led by a prominent woman, having demonstrated her professional capacity to move the railway industry forward and breaking obstacles for other women to access. The award was presented during InnoTrans 2018 in presence of the Transport Commissioner at the time. This time we are bringing the Women in Rail Award winners with us to InnoTrans at the Women in Mobility Luncheon. The event will be an opportunity to connect female role models to enhance visibility, and consequently foster innovation through diversity. It will bring together women leaders who influence the transport and mobility sector through their specialist knowledge and leadership skills.
In the frame of the European Year of Youth, we are bringing the winners of the ERRAC Student Competition and the Hack2Rail hackathon to our stand. For Europe’s Rail it is essential to engage with new audiences and listen to young people, start-ups and SMEs.
